About Us

Vision Statement
To advance the well-being of older persons, especially members of historically underserved ethnic and racial minorities, through improved evidence-based services.
The Institute is named for the late Congressman Edward R. Roybal, a visionary national leader instrumental in establishing aging services. The Roybal Institute is the realization of Congressman Edward R. Roybal's dream to improve the quality and effectiveness of health and human service delivery to older persons giving particular attention to underserved populations.

Mission Statement
The Roybal Institute seeks to increase the quality and applicability of interdisciplinary behavioral and social research in health and mental health of older underserved persons, especially in the Southern California region. It seeks to transform services through high quality training in the health and human services, using modern technologies for learning and teaching. The Institute is especially dedicated to elderly persons

It is the intent of the USC Roybal Institute to become the national and international focal point at USC for interdisciplinary translational research and practice with a commitment to the needs of minority older persons and their families. A primary goal is to conduct aging research that can be utilized to develop programs and services, and form the basis for policy recommendations and decisions that will improve the mental health, health, social, and economic status of diverse aging populations and their families at the local, state, and national levels.

Office Location

The USC Roybal Institute is located at the School of Social Work in the Hamovitch Center for Science in the Human Services. We have a university-wide framework that gives us the opportunity to improve communities through collaborations with colleagues of the School of Social Work, Andrus Gerontology Center and other USC Schools allowing us to expand USC's international leadership in the field of aging education and research.
